Who was or is the greatest boxer of all time? This might be one of the most highly debated questions in all of sports and to examine who is the best would mean to examine each contenders career extensively. I'm here to say that I'm not going to do that, but I will touch on who I think the top prospects are for the best. You can debate any of these guys in such a bias manner to make one stand out over the other and yet I still wouldn't think It would cover it. So here is a list (in no particular order) of 5 fighters who are eligible to take the title of greatest boxer. I'd have to say Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquaio.
Muhammad Ali-
Self-proclamined "The Greatest" and not too far from the truth, Muhammad Ali ended his career with a record of 56-5 with 37 knockouts. Besides eating up media with his electric personality, "No Vietcong ever call me N*gger", he brought the boxing world some of the most famous fights in one of the sports most action packed and competitive eras. He was the top dog in what is known as the golden age of heavyweight boxing by defeating heavyweight stand-outs such as Sonny Liston, Joe Fraizer, George Foreman, and Leon Spinks. His outer boxing style and rope-a-dope tactics in the ring made him appear as a middleweight rather than a heavy weight. When Ali wanted to strike he did it with precision and power. His pace and ring tactics overwhelmed the majority of his opponents. I personally believe if he wasn't stripped of his title and didn't deal with his appeal to the supreme court he could of been undefeated in his prime. He would have been more ready for "The Fight of the Century" with Joe Fraizer but whatever. There is no denying that Muhammad Ali is one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Joe Louis-
Regarded as the first African American to achieve the status of a nationwide hero within the United States, the "Brown Bomber" held the heavyweight title for longer (11 years, 8 months, 7 days) and made more successful defenses (25) than anyone. His record was 65-3 with 51 knockouts. He won the title by defeating James J. Braddock (Cinderella Man) in 1937 and his reign of nearly 12 years clearly shows how he is one of the best of all time. Anyone who was in the ring with him wouldn't last long. They say no one punched harder and more direct than the bomber.
Sugar Ray Robinson-
The inspiration for Muhammad Ali and literally created the term "pound for pound" due to dominating light heavy, middle, welter and light weight classes, Sugar Ray had a professional record of 128-1-2 with 84 knockouts. Robinson held the world welterweight title from 1946 to 1951, and won the world middleweight title in the later year. He retired in 1952, only to come back two and a half years later and regain the middleweight title in 1955. He then became the first boxer in history to win a divisional world championship five times. Quite the track record for the fighter who's career spanned 26 years. Renowned for his fluidity and being a very ambidextrous fighter, he had a rhythm like non other in the ring. Muhammad Ali is quoted saying this "The king, the master, my idol". That must account for something.
Mike Tyson-
Many have avoided calling Tyson one of the greatest. But then I ask myself who has instilled more fear in the ring than Mike? For god sake's his nick name is "The baddest man on the planet", not a nick name that is achieved easily. With a record 50-2-6 he has 44 knockouts. 44 knockouts meaning chances are you were going to die if you were in the ring with him. In the 80’s and early 90’s, Tyson was looked at as an unbeatable juggernaught who knocked out every contender of every size and caliber within the first few rounds of almost every fight. It became an entertaining query just how long the next unlucky sap would last. Lets say if he didn't run into personal and legal issues, didn't have Holyfield's ear for lunch and wasn't a crazy asshole then his perception and career would only have him be the most feared in the game.
Manny Pacquaio-
Too much to be said for the fighting pride of the Philippines. An eight-division world champion winning 10 world titles in eight weight classes, Manny Pacquaio is currently 57-3 with 38 knockouts coming off a fresh victory over the cheating fuck who is Margarito. Clearing out the welterweights one victory after the next, De La Hoya, Hatton, Cotto, all I can say is when is he going to fight Mayweather! Future president of the Phillipines as he is already in the house of representatives and mogul, he only seems hungrier for more and never ducks anybody. He has already proven his worth more and more every time he fights qith his aggressive speed and direct punches. No defense is safe from him making it almost impossible to handle him in the ring.
Please leave comments and add some to an honorable mentions list. If I missed anyone from my top 5 it's because I did not want them there!
