No, the mind your surroundings part of the title isn't an old Jedi proverb to make this post sound more intriguing, it is the reality of the matter. The words love and lust come hand and hand more often than we think and what's even more dangerous is when we can not see the difference between the two. There is no denying that love and lust are immensely intertwined and not being able to decipher the two could lead to heartbreak for your partner (or yourself). Why do we become infatuated with someone in the first place? Boredom within our lives? Instant Attraction? Are we looking for stability that can not be found within our selves? For better or for worse we must all "mind our surroundings". Where and when are relationships more likely to workout? For those who go away to college young men and women are no stranger to coed romance but are the relationships made at these institutions the ones we all strive for? David Coleman, self-proclaimed "Hitch" for the youth has been ranked as Speaker of the Year nine times by Campus Activities Magazine and three times by the National Association of Campus Activities has an opinion on the matter. “College is too artificial a situation to have a relationship,” said Coleman. He expresses this opinion by stating how college doesn't allow the majority to act true to ourselves as freely as we think we do. Late nights, early mornings and Adderall fueled library sessions directly influence our overall mindset to make us act in ways and lust in ways we normally would not under regular circumstances. I'm not saying I fully agree with the statement but it does make one think. Think about other times and places where love and lust reign. How about work/office romances? Summer romances? It's no secret we are products of our ever changing environments. When we are involved with another we must ask ourselves whether we are in love or lust and hopefully be on the same page as the ones we strive for. Sometimes we are well aware of the reality of a hookup, but it usually complicates. Nothing is as deadly and as beautiful as love. We must go out and search for these answers ourselves and never be afraid to experience something new. In the end we must adapt in order to survive.

Love, Lust and mind your surroundings

ReplyDeleteCollege is only a step above high school, and everyone knows they are not themselves in high school (and if you are yourself chances are others don't like you for some stupid reason). In college people begin becoming more of who they are, but they are not quite there yet. It's just another stage in life that we all must go through. And I'm not saying that you must be in college to go through the stage. It is more of an age based stage.
Oh and Skyler,
